Approaching retirement

Get your pensions straight before you retire.

If you have had several jobs, you may not be sure which ones left you a pension. Here is what to gather, in order. None of it costs anything.

  1. List every job you have had

Each one is a possible pension. Rough dates are fine. You can do this free in our organiser, or on paper.

  2. Find who runs each pension

The government’s free Pension Tracing Service gives you contact details for a scheme. It does not tell you whether you have a pension there. Only the scheme can.

  3. Ask each one for your details

Write to each scheme and ask what they hold for you, your latest statement, and the scheme’s normal retirement age. Replies often take a few weeks, so start early and note the date you wrote.

  4. Check your State Pension

The free State Pension forecast on GOV.UK shows how much you could get and when.

  5. Use the free guidance you are entitled to

If you are 50 or over and have a defined contribution pension, you can book a free Pension Wise appointment to talk through your options. For personal advice, check the adviser on the FCA Register.

Then keep it all in one file.

Our organiser turns your list into a Pension File: every pension on a page, each letter already written from your records, and a page your family can use. Listing your jobs and downloading single letters is free.
