Risk concerns outcomes, not just a label

The FCA describes investment risk as the possibility that an investment does not perform as expected, particularly through losing money. Returns can be negative, and accepting more risk does not ensure a better outcome. Investments can fall as well as rise.

A heading such as low, medium or high needs its accompanying explanation. Keep the label alongside the document it came from. Ask what it describes before treating a number or word as an answer to your personal circumstances.

A stable number can still buy less

MoneyHelper explains that cash savings can lose purchasing power when interest does not keep pace with rising prices. Other investments can change in price, including falling when money is needed.

Distinguish a cash amount from what it can buy. The inflation illustration lets you explore an assumed price change; it does not supply a current inflation rate or predict your pension income.

Keep personal questions private

The FCA asks investors to consider the purpose of the money, when it may be needed and the effect of losses. These questions need individual context; this guide does not convert your answers into an approved investment or risk score.

Write unresolved questions in your own private preparation notes. If you need an individual recommendation, seek an appropriately authorised adviser and check their permissions. An educational article cannot assess the consequences of a change for your household.

Charts and protections have limits

MoneyHelper notes that compensation generally does not cover poor investment performance. A regulated firm or a smooth historical chart does not make investment losses impossible.

Past performance does not predict future returns. Do not select a growth-tool assumption simply because it appeared on an old chart. Keep any hypothetical result labelled and return to the provider or adviser for unanswered questions.
