A State Pension is not one shareable cash pot

GOV.UK explains that courts can make a pension-sharing order on divorce or civil partnership dissolution involving Additional State Pension or a protected payment. Receiving an ordered share adds a payment to State Pension; being ordered to share reduces it.

That description does not mean your whole State Pension is divided automatically or that this guide can decide what an order should say. Keep the named component and actual legal document distinct from an informal estimate or a private investment pot.

Prepare a separate record for each pension

For preparation, list government pension documents and private scheme documents separately. Retain the original labels, dates and any order wording. If a document uses “Additional State Pension”, “protected payment” or a private scheme benefit, do not replace those terms with one generic pension balance.

A useful private question could be: “Which pension or component does this document concern, and what evidence is needed to understand it?” This helps you explain uncertainty without asserting that a particular share or valuation is correct.

  • Separate a forecast from an official valuation or decision.
  • Keep each private scheme’s correspondence with that scheme.
  • Mark missing or unclear documents explicitly.

Use guidance suited to your stage and location

MoneyHelper offers free impartial pensions guidance for people in the early stages of divorce or dissolution. Its page explains help with options, questions and further specialist support. If a consent or financial order already exists, it points to its pension specialists for help instead.

The appointment process asks where in the UK the divorce or dissolution is taking place so the applicable laws can be considered. Use that official route for arranging guidance; All Pensions neither books an appointment nor asks you to submit legal or family details here.

Keep guidance and legal decisions distinct

An educational explanation is not an interpretation of your court order, a recommended settlement or instructions to transfer a pension. Ask the appropriate legal or pension professional about the effect of a specific document and keep their response with its date and scope.

If your question instead concerns a death or inheritance, use the separate bereavement guide. Do not apply a divorce pension-sharing explanation to survivor entitlement. This page does not calculate a share, process an order or change a government or provider record.
