What the term means
An employer contribution is the employer’s payment towards a workplace pension. The applicable amounts and rules depend on the scheme and circumstances; a single rate is not universal.
How to label it in your records
Keep the employer payment separate from your own deduction and other entries. Preserve the period and labels shown on the original record rather than adding unlike figures under one heading.
A fictional statement example
Suppose a monthly statement records £180 of gross member contributions, including any member relief, and £120 of employer contributions. The recorded defined contribution saving totals £300. These are assumed labels for reconciliation only; the example does not check scheme minimums, payroll accuracy or tax entitlement.
Do not add provider member relief to the employer’s £120. Salary sacrifice can also be recorded as employer contributions. Ask for the scheme and payroll explanation where labels are unclear, and keep actual receipt distinct from an intended payment.

Employer tax relief and your allowance are different
An employer’s potential business tax deduction is different from personal relief on a member payment. HMRC describes conditions for employer contributions to be deductible, including the wholly-and-exclusively business test for a trade or profession and the period in which payment is made. An accounting accrual alone is not a contribution paid.
Employer saving counts when checking your pension annual allowance alongside relevant saving in other arrangements. It does not create a separate allowance or require you to claim relief at source on the employer payment. A provider statement can establish a recorded payment without establishing the employer’s deductibility or your personal allowance.

A useful question
If a figure is unclear, ask which period it concerns and how it was calculated. The contribution-query guide helps organise that enquiry; it does not independently verify payroll or scheme receipt.
