What it means

HMRC describes the normal minimum pension age as the usual tax-rule threshold for taking benefits from registered schemes. It is 55 at the source check on 4 October 2026 and is due to become 57 on 6 April 2028.

Your scheme still has rules

A scheme can specify a later age for particular benefits. Protected ages and ill-health provisions can apply in specific cases. Confirm your own rights with the administrator rather than treating the general minimum as a promised payment date.

What to record

Label an earliest-access answer separately from a scheme’s normal benefit date and your planned retirement date. Keep the written source and check date so that an old age reference can be revisited when rules change.

  • Record which scheme and membership section the answer concerns.
  • Leave exceptions unconfirmed until the administrator explains them.
