Private-pension access has rules
HMRC states that the normal minimum pension age is currently 55 and increases to 57 on 6 April 2028. Scheme rules can set a later benefit age. Protected pension ages and ill-health provisions can affect particular cases; do not assume an exception applies to you.
Ask your administrator to confirm the rule for your own membership and intended date. Keep the answer and its date with the scheme record. An online age label is not confirmation that your provider can pay the particular benefit you want.

State Pension age is a separate check
The GOV.UK State Pension age tool gives the date you reach that age. It can differ from private-pension access, and government reviews can change the results. Check the official tool instead of applying a remembered age to everyone.
Use separate fields in your own notes for “State Pension age checked”, “scheme date confirmed” and “planned retirement date”. This keeps a plan from looking like an entitlement.

Ask about the exact benefit
Name the scheme and the benefit when asking about access. Request clarification if a statement refers to a normal pension date while another letter refers to an earliest access date. Do not overwrite one with the other.
Your next step is to resolve the date and conditions, not to submit a withdrawal. Our document checklist can hold the outstanding task; use the provider’s verified channel for personal identification.
- Which benefit and membership section does this date concern?
- Are there conditions or protected rights I need confirmed in writing?
- What changes if benefits are taken before the scheme’s normal date?
