A career break: clarify leave, payments and return plans

Keep the workplace scheme, break agreement and National Insurance questions distinct.

Identify the arrangement before applying a rule

A career break might be unpaid leave under an ongoing contract, or a period after leaving employment. These are different starting points. GOV.UK explains that contributions during unpaid leave or after stopping work may be possible, depending on the employer or scheme. Ask which arrangement applies.

Prepare a note before the break

Write down the agreed start date and expected return date, with “proposed” beside anything not confirmed. Keep the employer’s agreement and the pension scheme’s response together in your private filing.

Ask payroll to explain what happens to contributions and the scheme to explain membership or benefit accrual. A promise to hold your job open does not answer every pension question.

  • What scheme record remains in place during this break?
  • Will any employee or employer payments continue, and on what basis?
  • Which benefit or membership terms change?
  • Who should I contact if the return date changes?

Keep the gap visible without inventing an outcome

On your own timeline, separate “not working”, “not paid” and “no contribution shown”. Each describes something different. Keep a missing payment as a query until payroll or the provider explains it. Do not manufacture a pot value or lost-growth estimate.

The browser organiser does not administer a career-break agreement or calculate benefits. Keep short employment notes here and keep real correspondence privately.

A workplace break is not a National Insurance conclusion

National Insurance credits depend on circumstances, including some caring, benefit and job-seeking situations. Check the official eligibility route and your record; do not assume every career break creates a gap or every gap needs a payment.

Confirm what happens when you return

Before using a new payslip as proof that everything has restarted, ask which scheme and pay period it covers. Keep the return confirmation and first contribution question as a new dated step. If you instead change employer or work for yourself, use the relevant guide rather than overwriting the old scheme record.
