Keep the old scheme in view
GOV.UK explains that a workplace pension remains yours when you change jobs. There can be specific rules for short membership of a defined benefit scheme, including possible refunds or transfers. Ask the scheme about your own record rather than assuming every period of work produced a retained pot.
Create two records, then clarify them
Keep the former job and the new job separate on your pension list. A provider used by both employers might still issue different scheme details. One provider name should not make you merge two uncertain records.
Note the leaving date as approximate if you are unsure. Put an old statement date beside any recorded figure. This makes it clear that the figure is historical rather than a live balance. Ask the old scheme how to keep your contact details current.
Gather the new scheme information
Save the scheme name and joining information from your employer’s paperwork. A pension list works best when a new job creates an explicit research task rather than replacing the old entry.
If you later consider combining pensions, treat that as a separate decision. Our organiser helps make a list; it does not compare suitability, benefits or transfer terms. Finding and recording a pension is useful even when you leave it where it is.
A small leaving-job checklist
Set aside one short session to tidy the old record. You can come back for missing information later.
- Keep the scheme name and an official contact link.
- Check the provider has your current contact details.
- Keep evidence of the enquiry outcome and its date.
- Mark any missing scheme information as unconfirmed.
