Check your National Insurance record

Understand what the official record shows, note missing or unclear years privately and distinguish contribution history from a pension forecast.

What the official record can show

The government service shows National Insurance paid up to the start of the current tax year, recorded credits and gaps. It can also show whether voluntary payments could change a forecast, their cost and online payment availability. A record of contributions is a different document from a State Pension forecast.

Keep the check date with any private copy. If the period you want to understand is outside the stated coverage, note that limitation rather than assuming an absent entry proves nothing was paid.

Access it through GOV.UK

Online access requires government sign-in and may require identity proof. GOV.UK also explains printed-statement routes, including different routes for people abroad. Requests have coverage restrictions, including the current and previous tax year; read the service conditions before requesting a statement.

Start from the public GOV.UK guidance link. Do not put government credentials, an NI number or an identity document into an All Pensions search or correction report. All Pensions does not connect to the record service.

Make a year-by-year question list

In your own private notes, give each unclear year a separate question. Copy the official wording and distinguish “record not yet checked” from “gap shown on the record”. Keep any relevant evidence privately beside the question; do not paste it into this public library.

For example, a fictional note could say “Year A: the record label is unclear; employment evidence kept separately; question prepared”. That records uncertainty without claiming a missing contribution, a completed qualifying year or a pension shortfall.

  • Record the year and exact label.
  • Note which document supports your question.
  • Keep the contact date and response separately from your initial interpretation.

Resolve questions before considering payment

GOV.UK directs suspected record errors to HMRC and says to check credits eligibility before deciding on voluntary payments. A gap is a reason to investigate, not an instruction to pay.

Continue with the credits and gaps guides for distinct next steps. The reminder checklist helps you track your own preparation; it does not correct records or confirm that a payment would benefit you.
