Understand your State Pension forecast

Read the labels and conditions on an official forecast, keep a dated copy and prepare questions without treating it as a guaranteed payment.

Start with the right government route

The GOV.UK forecast service explains what you could receive, when and possible increases. Government sign-in and any required identity checks happen there. It excludes people already receiving State Pension or who have deferred claiming; the page directs them to the Pension Service in the UK or International Pension Centre abroad.

Read the official page before opening the service. It also explains alternative ways to request a forecast and their conditions. All Pensions does not sign in for you, retrieve a forecast or check your identity.

Read each figure with its label

When you have your own forecast, read the surrounding explanation before copying a headline amount. In your private notes, keep the payment period, date and stated assumptions beside each figure. If there is more than one amount, preserve the original labels rather than choosing the largest.

A useful question might be: “Which of these figures describes my position now, and what conditions apply to the other figure?” This is a question to ask about your document, not a claim that every forecast has the same layout. Leave an unexplained figure unresolved.

  • Keep the original document alongside your notes.
  • Distinguish an official figure from your own calculation.
  • Write down the exact wording you need explained.

Keep the date and conditions

GOV.UK warns that State Pension age is reviewed and forecast results can change. A dated forecast therefore belongs in a record of what you were told at that time, rather than being treated as a permanent payment promise.

If you later obtain a different forecast, retain the date and source of each copy privately. Compare the labels and assumptions before describing the difference as an increase or a mistake. Prepare a specific question about the change instead of editing the old copy to match the new one.

Do not turn a forecast into a pot balance

For organisation, keep State Pension income information separate from private pension cash balances and scheme income estimates. A weekly figure and a pot value cannot be added directly into one total; the units describe different things.

Use the State Pension checklist to organise the next questions. Ticks mean that you marked a reminder, not that All Pensions verified the forecast or that a government claim is complete. Keep the actual forecast in your own secure records.
