Record pension income options without mixing up the figures

Keep pot balances, scheme income estimates and product quotations distinct so questions remain clear.

Copy the label with the number

A retirement record should preserve what a document actually says. Put its scheme, date, figure label and payment period together. If a statement shows a projection, retain that label and the stated assumptions. Do not rename it “guaranteed income” unless the document explicitly says so.

A fictional table might contain “pot value on statement date”, “annual scheme estimate at quoted date” and “State Pension forecast checked separately”. Those entries should remain separate, with blanks for information you do not yet have.

  • Keep monthly and annual figures visibly labelled.
  • Retain gross/net and estimate/quotation descriptions.
  • Ask the issuer to explain unclear wording.

Understand two common terms

An annuity uses pension money to buy income on the terms chosen. A lifetime annuity and a fixed-term annuity have different payment durations. Drawdown leaves pension money invested while withdrawals are taken, so its income is not guaranteed and the money can run out.

Knowing the terms is a starting point for a question list. It does not identify an option that suits you, and this page provides no product comparison or suggested withdrawal rate.

Keep the unanswered conditions visible

Create one question row per document or option. Ask what the figure includes, which dates and conditions it depends on, and which charges or tax treatment need explanation. If a reply only answers one part, leave the rest open.

GOV.UK directs people to guidance and financial advice when planning retirement income. A well-labelled record can make that conversation clearer; an organised list alone does not establish affordability or personal suitability.

  • Which scheme and benefit does this figure describe?
  • Which assumptions or conditions are printed beside it?
  • Is the document still current, and what needs to be checked again?
