Starting a business: separate personal and employer pension questions

Keep business structure, personal pension records and possible duties to staff distinct.

Name the business arrangement

GOV.UK distinguishes sole traders, limited companies and other structures. A limited company is legally separate from its owners; structure affects tax and responsibilities. Ask your accountant or appropriate adviser about your actual arrangement instead of treating every business owner as self-employed in the same way.

Keep personal plans and duties to staff separate

The Pensions Regulator explains that no-staff and director arrangements can have different automatic-enrolment outcomes, depending on contracts and circumstances. Having no eligible staff is not always the same as having no duties. Check its actual guidance, including what happens if circumstances change; this page does not certify an exemption.

Use separate records for separate questions

Your earlier workplace pensions remain relevant to your personal history. A company’s payroll or pension duties are a different record set. Do not put a staff scheme or an employee’s benefits into your own personal pension total.

In your private filing, label whether an amount is a personal payment, a company/employer payment or merely planned. Keep the provider’s receipt and document date separate from a business budget or bank instruction.

  • Which legal business name and role does the question concern?
  • Which personal scheme holds existing benefits?
  • Are there staff/director contracts that need employer-duty advice?
  • Who can explain the contribution method and record requirements?

Do not choose a structure just from a pension illustration

MoneyHelper’s self-employed guide describes pension arrangements and points to professional advice for recommendations. A charge or growth illustration does not establish suitability, a permitted company contribution or the best business structure. No contribution amount or tax-saving strategy is recommended here.

Keep the organiser’s role clear

The browser organiser is for your own employment notes and tracing status. It is not employer payroll, an automatic-enrolment compliance service or a company pension administration system. Keep real staff, director, business-tax and pension documents privately.

For a personal record task, use the document checklist and self-employed overview. For employer duties, use the regulator’s current routes and appropriate help. This guide does not set up a company, enrol staff, contact the regulator or submit returns.
