Choose the change you are facing
A life change can create several pension questions at once. Start with the event you need to handle now, then separate the employment or family change from the scheme record and the decision still to be made. These guides offer an organising route; they do not assess entitlement or make choices for you.
Use the linked guides for work, business and family changes. Working abroad, returning to the UK and ill health have their own record questions too. Browse the Life events collection for those guides; retirement overseas has a separate route.
When work changes
For a new or departing job, identify the scheme and the relevant employment period. For leave, career breaks or concurrent work, name the actual arrangement and ask payroll or the scheme which rules apply. The official workplace guidance distinguishes these situations; one rule should not be applied to every change.

Business and project work
Becoming self-employed, starting a business, freelancing and contracting can involve different arrangements. Use the linked guide for the specific transition, then keep the employment/payer, scheme and contribution question distinct.
These guides organise evidence. They do not assess employment status, tax or employer duties, choose a business structure or recommend a pension payment.
When family circumstances change
Personal-detail updates, beneficiary instructions, divorce valuations and notifications after a death are distinct tasks. Keep the question and the organisation responsible for answering it visible. The scheme’s response and any appropriate legal or financial guidance matter more than an assumption based on relationship status.

Use a small private action list
For your own filing, label the event, the scheme and the question. Keep “requested” different from “confirmed”, and attach dates to amounts and replies. Original paperwork can then support the next conversation without turning a clue into a confirmed benefit.
- Identify whose record it is and what your authority is.
- Keep employment, provider and scheme names separate.
- Use the organisation’s current official contact process.
- Record the outcome and the unresolved question.
Understand what All Pensions can help with
The browser Passport helps organise employer notes and tracing status in one tab. It does not store family/estate documents, invite partners, administer leave, change beneficiaries, value settlements or send provider requests. Keep real identifiers and sensitive correspondence privately.
For actual rules and decisions, follow the official sources on the relevant guide and seek appropriate specialist help where required. Source checks are not independent specialist review. The document and search checklists help structure private preparation without an email gate.
