Eligibility and the claim route
You can claim UK State Pension abroad if you meet the qualifying conditions. GOV.UK also signposts rules for people who have lived or worked overseas. Its abroad guide provides International Pension Centre and claim-form routes, with conditions on when to claim.
An overseas state pension is a separate question. GOV.UK advises contacting the pension authority where you live about pensions from other countries, and the International Pension Centre for help with the UK claim. Do not treat an overseas employment record as automatic confirmation of a UK entitlement.

Annual increases depend on where you live
GOV.UK lists the EEA, Gibraltar, Switzerland and certain countries with UK social security agreements for annual State Pension increases. It explicitly excludes Canada and New Zealand from increases despite their agreements. Outside the listed coverage, yearly increases do not apply.
The government page says the pension returns to the current rate if you return to live in the UK, and directs people considering a move after retirement to the International Pension Centre. Check the current country guidance for your circumstances before assuming an existing payment will keep rising.

Keep payment questions separate
The abroad claim guide explains bank-account options, currency conversion, payment timing and living part of the year overseas. These administrative arrangements are separate from whether annual increases apply. Read the current conditions rather than copying someone else’s bank or payment arrangement.
Prepare payment questions privately and provide banking details only through the verified official process. All Pensions does not collect bank details, transfer pension payments or calculate exchange rates or overseas taxes.

Prepare a useful move or claim conversation
Use a private list with separate headings for the proposed country of residence, government pension questions, overseas pension questions and private schemes. Distinguish “considering a move” from a change already made. Keep official replies with the date and the circumstances they cover.
A useful question is: “Which rules apply to my UK State Pension if I live in this country, and what changes must I report?” Ask a separate question about each private scheme. A reply about annual increases does not settle tax, healthcare, immigration or private pension rules.
- Confirm the official claim or change-reporting route.
- Ask about annual increases for the intended country.
- Keep currency/payment and tax questions distinct.
