State Pension and workplace pensions: keep separate records

Understand how government income and workplace benefits fit into one preparation list without adding pot balances, income estimates and forecasts together.

Different sources can sit on the same list

GOV.UK describes retirement income from the State Pension and from schemes you or an employer pay into. Having a workplace pension does not make its paperwork a State Pension record. Keep each source identifiable when preparing for retirement.

Begin with one line per private scheme and a separate line for State Pension information. Missing employer records should remain visible as unresolved questions rather than disappearing into a combined headline amount.

A pot value is not an income figure

A cash balance, an annual scheme income estimate and a weekly State Pension forecast have different units. Adding them directly creates a total that does not describe either wealth or income. Preserve the original label and period when copying any figure.

For example, fictional paperwork could contain “private pot value”, “annual scheme estimate” and “weekly government forecast”. Those three labels can be recorded beside one another without being totalled. Any later income comparison needs compatible periods and clearly stated assumptions.

  • Keep pot balances apart from payment estimates.
  • Retain dates, periods and gross/net labels when supplied.
  • Mark whether a figure is a forecast, quotation or actual payment.

Do not double-count a scheme’s own illustrations

MoneyHelper explains that defined contribution savings can change in value and that estimated income can depend on how benefits are taken. A scheme estimate and the pot used to produce it are therefore not automatically two independent sources of retirement income.

Read the assumptions on each document. If it offers different illustrations, keep their option names rather than including every illustration in a total. Ask the administrator which figure describes the option being discussed; this guide does not select that option.

Keep start dates and open questions visible

For a private preparation record, note when each income source might start, what remains unconfirmed and who can answer it. An expected government start date should not be used as evidence that all private schemes will pay at that date.

The document checklist helps organise private scheme paperwork, while the State Pension checklist covers government-route reminders. Neither retrieves records or confirms an income total. Continue with the budget guide only after preserving the differences between the figures.
