Working and semi-retirement: keep the decisions separate

Organise work plans, scheme dates and different income sources without assuming pension age requires stopping work or deciding whether a reduced-hours plan is affordable.

State Pension age does not require stopping work

GOV.UK explains that you can continue working past State Pension age. There is no official retirement age, although some employers may be able to set a compulsory retirement age in particular circumstances. Flexible working can be requested at any age.

A request for different hours is not confirmation that an employer has agreed. Keep proposed work changes and agreed arrangements separate from pension access dates. This guide does not determine employment rights in an individual case.

Semi-retirement is a plan, not a single pension rule

Use a separate record for the work pattern you are considering, expected earnings and each pension source. Keep a scheme’s access and normal pension dates, State Pension dates and your preferred stopping date distinct.

Before relying on an income estimate, ask which period it covers and whether it assumes a work change that has not happened. An unanswered hours, contribution or payment question remains unknown; do not turn a proposed timetable into confirmed income.

  • Which work changes have actually been agreed?
  • Which scheme dates and payments have been confirmed?
  • Which income estimates still depend on unconfirmed plans?

Ask about interactions before treating the plan as settled

GOV.UK describes private and State pensions as separate income sources. Combining work and pension information needs compatible periods, original labels and clear dates; an investment pot is not another monthly salary.

Use the tax and scheme-option guides to prepare questions about earnings, withdrawals and continuing contributions. This article supplies no retirement-readiness score, entitlement decision or advice to claim, defer, withdraw or stop work. Take individual decisions to the employer, provider or appropriate guidance/advice service.
