Member reference

A reference a scheme uses to identify a member record; keep it with the relevant scheme rather than treating it as a value or entitlement.

What the term means

A member reference identifies a record within a scheme. For example, Nest describes its Nest ID as a unique reference available in a welcome letter. Other schemes use their own names and formats; ask your scheme if a label is unclear.

Keep it in context

Store the reference privately alongside the scheme and document date. A reference is neither a pot value nor proof of current contributions. Similar provider names do not make references interchangeable.

Use the scheme’s verified process

The Passport has no dedicated field or upload workflow for member references. Keep them in your private records and supply them only through the official process needed for an enquiry.
