How to find your workplace pension scheme details

Find the scheme name and a trustworthy contact route, then ask whether it holds a record for your employment period.

Look for a scheme name, not just a logo

Start with joining letters, pension statements and your own employment records. MoneyHelper suggests checking old paperwork or asking a previous employer or colleague for the provider’s name.

Make a small list with separate columns for employer, work dates, scheme name and contact source. If a name has changed, keep both names and the document date. Do not silently replace a historical clue with the current company’s name.

Ask a question tied to your work dates

A useful first question is: “Which pension scheme covered staff in my role during these years, and who should I contact now?” Approximate dates are a starting clue; tell the employer if they are uncertain.

For current automatic enrolment, the joining letter should identify the scheme type and who runs it. That is useful paperwork to request, but today’s scheme does not prove which scheme an earlier job used.

Check the contact before sending identity details

Use the official scheme or provider website to establish a current contact route. If you cannot identify a contact, the linked tracing guide explains the government contact-finding service and its limits.

Keep policy numbers, addresses and identity documents in your private records. All Pensions does not submit an enquiry or hold uploaded evidence. Avoid placing sensitive details into a general public contact form just because it carries a familiar name.

  • Record the official contact URL and the day you checked it.
  • Note which employer and period the enquiry concerns.
  • Keep the reply separate from an unconfirmed lead.

Ask for a record search, then record the result

A scheme contact and an individual pension record are different things. Ask what information the administrator needs to search and which scheme the response covers. If the reply is ambiguous, keep the outcome unresolved.

You can add an employer clue to the Passport and set a tracing status yourself. All Pensions does not independently validate that reply or calculate benefits. Use the search checklist to keep follow-up questions consistent.
