Start with the actual work arrangement
Paid and unpaid family leave can have different pension arrangements. MoneyHelper explains the usual contribution bases and the importance of checking employer and scheme terms. If working hours or employment changes, request an explanation for the actual change rather than assuming the previous arrangement continues.

Check the State Pension record separately
GOV.UK explains that Child Benefit claims can protect State Pension through National Insurance credits, including when payment is declined. Conditions apply; consult the current Child Benefit and credit eligibility guidance. A workplace pension deduction does not establish that the relevant NI credits are on your record.

Use a small private checklist
Keep work/leave paperwork, government correspondence and pension statements in distinct folders or labelled notes. This makes a question easier to direct to payroll, the pension provider or the relevant government service. There is no need to put a child’s personal details on a public pension-search form.
- Which leave type, pay periods or work changes have been agreed?
- Which scheme has explained the contribution method?
- Which official Child Benefit/NI-credit question remains unresolved?
- Do the scheme’s beneficiary or dependant records need review?
Ask about beneficiaries without assuming an inheritance result
GOV.UK explains that scheme rules determine who can be nominated and what payments may be available. Ask your scheme about its instructions and any dependant criteria; a new family relationship is not itself a confirmed benefit award.
Choose one useful next step
If the immediate question is payroll, use the maternity or paternity guide and contribution-query route. If it concerns credits, read the official eligibility page and inspect your actual NI record through GOV.UK. If it concerns beneficiaries, use the scheme’s process.
This page does not decide benefit entitlement, calculate contribution needs or recommend changing investments. Keep short employer notes in the browser organiser; it has no child profiles, family access or benefit-claim feature.
