Name the paid and unpaid periods
GOV.UK and MoneyHelper distinguish paid leave from unpaid maternity periods, with employer policies and scheme terms also relevant. Do not assume employer payments simply stop whenever your pay changes. Ask payroll which maternity arrangement applies and how each period is treated.

Check the contribution method
MoneyHelper explains that employee payments during paid leave usually reflect actual pay, while employer payments use the normal pay basis. Salary-sacrifice payments are treated as employer contributions. Ask payroll to identify your method before comparing amounts; this guide does not calculate what you are owed.

Make a dated contribution query
MoneyHelper’s family-leave checking guide suggests comparing payslips, scheme statements and a payroll breakdown, and asking the employer to investigate discrepancies. A suspected difference is a query, not a proven underpayment.
- List the relevant leave and pay periods privately.
- Ask which employee and employer calculation bases were used.
- Compare the payroll explanation with the provider’s recorded receipts.
- Keep replies, corrections and remaining questions together.

Keep parent-related credits separate
GOV.UK lists National Insurance credit routes for some parental-pay and parent/guardian situations. Registration, payment receipt and credit entitlement are separate questions. Check the current official guidance for your circumstances instead of assuming workplace deductions protect every State Pension year.
Recheck the record after returning
A change in hours or a decision not to return deserves a new scheme/payroll explanation. Preserve the before-leave note so you can see what changed. Your private file can distinguish the agreed return date from the first payroll period actually processed.
Keep short notes in the browser organiser. It does not collect family documents, submit benefit claims, determine maternity rights or send payroll complaints. For unresolved rights or disputes, follow MoneyHelper’s official help routes.
