Find out what your employer has arranged
Starting a job does not by itself confirm pension membership. GOV.UK sets out automatic-enrolment conditions, exceptions and ways to ask to join. Use that guidance and your employer’s response instead of assuming your age or first payslip settles the question.

Keep the joining letter with your private records
An automatic-enrolment letter should explain the joining date, pension type, scheme operator, contribution arrangements and tax-relief method. If you do not have it, ask payroll or HR which paperwork applies to you. A written postponement notice and actual joining confirmation are different records.

Give each name its own place
Your employer might trade under a name that differs from the name on your contract. The pension scheme and its administrator can have other names again. Write each in a labelled note so that you can follow the trail if you move jobs later.
For a first record, leave an unknown scheme or amount unknown. A payslip deduction is a clue to a payment, not a current pension valuation. Add a figure only when you know its type and document date.
- Employment: employer name and approximate starting date.
- Scheme: joining date, scheme name and administrator, when confirmed.
- Evidence: document date, what it confirms and the next question.
Ask one clear question
For example: “Which scheme should I contact about this pay period?” is easier to investigate than “Where is my pension?” Keep the question, official contact route and reply date together. Check contribution questions with the linked guide.
The browser Passport is a tab-only organiser. Keep short notes here and keep joining letters privately; it does not enrol you, check eligibility or contact payroll. This guide does not recommend opting out or choose an investment.
