Getting married: review your pension records

Keep individual scheme records clear and ask about contact details, beneficiaries and scheme-specific partner benefits.

Start with each person’s scheme list

A marriage or civil partnership is a useful occasion to review paperwork. Begin with separate lists of each person’s workplace, personal and State Pension records. Do not turn two names on a household plan into a claim that the pensions are jointly owned or that both people can access a provider account.

For your private note, identify whose record it is, which scheme it concerns and what needs checking. The retirement-as-a-couple guide helps keep separate pension evidence alongside shared planning questions.

Ask the scheme what partner benefits mean

GOV.UK explains that nomination and death benefits depend on scheme rules, including who can receive particular payments. Ask each scheme how marriage or civil partnership affects its records or any partner/dependant benefits. Relationship status alone is not a provider’s confirmation of entitlement.

Keep personal-detail updates separate from nominations

If your name or address changes, follow the scheme’s official personal-details process. A contact update and a beneficiary instruction are different tasks. Ask which evidence and channel it requires, and retain confirmation of the specific change in your private filing.

The beneficiary guide explains how to ask about scheme-specific expression-of-wish or nomination arrangements. This page does not appoint a beneficiary, alter a will, decide inheritance rights or guarantee a payment.

  • Which records need a name or contact-detail update?
  • What partner or dependant information does this scheme ask for?
  • Does the scheme have a nomination or expression-of-wish process?
  • What has it confirmed, and what remains a question?

Prepare together without sharing credentials

Each person can prepare their own questions and decide what information to discuss privately. Do not treat permission to help organise as permission to sign in as someone else or change their pension. Ask the provider about its authorised-representative process if help is needed.

The browser organiser has no shared-account or partner-access feature. Keep short employment notes only; keep marriage certificates, identity documents and actual member references privately. It does not send requests or give legal, estate or financial advice.
