Retiring abroad: organise payment, tax and scheme questions

Keep each pension’s payment arrangements, country-specific questions and official replies together. Moving country does not require an automatic pension transfer.

Moving residence and moving a pension are separate decisions

MoneyHelper describes leaving a UK pension in place as distinct from transferring it to an overseas scheme. Moving country does not itself require a pension transfer. Tell the provider about the move and ask it to confirm the arrangements it can offer.

Keep a separate note for each scheme: payment currency, supported bank arrangements, any fees and the process for updating contact details. MoneyHelper highlights exchange-rate changes and exchange fees; a sterling pension amount does not guarantee a fixed amount in another currency.

Check State Pension increases for the country concerned

GOV.UK makes annual State Pension increases dependent on where you live. They are not available in every country, and a social security agreement alone is not enough to assume increases: the official page identifies exceptions.

Check the current GOV.UK country rules rather than copying an old list into your plan. Keep the source date and any official reply with your State Pension record. Private-scheme increases and State Pension increases are separate questions.

Confirm tax treatment before relying on a net figure

GOV.UK says a pension may be taxed in the UK and in the country where you are resident. A double-taxation agreement can affect where tax is paid. You must tell HMRC if you move abroad; ask about the rules for the particular income and country rather than assuming all pension payments are treated alike.

The source context here is 2026/27. This guide does not decide tax residence, treaty relief or tax liability, and it does not assume UK tax-free treatment also applies overseas. Keep gross pension figures separate from any net estimate and record who supplied the estimate.

Ask about continuing contributions, local rules and any proposed transfer through verified official or professional routes. This guide recommends no country, currency service or transfer. Do not act on pressure to move a pension or on an unsolicited offer of high returns.
