Start with the actual arrangement for each role
GOV.UK explains that tax and employment-law status can differ, and that employed and self-employed work can coexist. For each freelance project or other job, identify the contracting or paying organisation and ask which arrangement applies. The word “freelance” alone is not an employment-status assessment.

Keep workplace and personal arrangements distinct
If one role has a workplace scheme and another involves your own pension arrangement, keep both trails visible. MoneyHelper explains that many personal pension providers support regular or one-off payments, but actual terms differ. Ask the provider about its payment options rather than assuming every plan suits irregular income.

Keep planned, paid and acknowledged separate
A client invoice and the pension provider’s receipt are different records. For your private contribution note, label the payer, arrangement, payment date and provider confirmation. Do not call an invoice amount a pension contribution or assume a payment instruction proves it arrived.
If you have several client projects, the same provider name can still appear on different pension records. Keep original scheme references privately and ask what each document covers.
- Which role or period is the pension question about?
- Is there an employer scheme, a personal plan or still an unknown arrangement?
- What do the product terms say about payment options and charges?
- Which payments are confirmed on provider records?
Keep NI and tax questions separate
Use the official National Insurance record and forecast for State Pension questions. Use your provider’s actual contribution method and current tax guidance for relief questions. A list of freelance invoices is not a qualifying-year determination or a calculation of tax-relievable earnings.
This guide does not assess status, recommend a pension or a payment schedule, or calculate affordability or tax relief. Use appropriate guidance or professional help for those decisions.
Build a clear trail without sending private work documents
The browser organiser can hold employer or work notes in one tab. It has no client-invoice vault, tax filing or payment feature. Keep actual client names, contracts, accounts and identifiers in your private filing.
Use the multiple-jobs guide for concurrent employed work, the contracting guide for agency/umbrella arrangements and the self-employed overview for general pension-record questions.
