Contractor is not one employment status
GOV.UK explains that contractors can be self-employed, workers or employees in different arrangements. Tax and employment-law status are separate questions. Identify the actual contract and paying/employing organisations rather than assuming every assignment creates the same pension rights.

Read the umbrella records in the right order
GOV.UK explains that eligible umbrella employees must be automatically enrolled. Its guidance distinguishes the assignment-rate reconciliation from gross-pay and take-home-pay deductions, including employer and employee pension entries. Ask the umbrella company to explain unclear figures before comparing them.
Keep the work trail separate from the scheme trail
For your private list, record the client or assignment name, agency, legal employer/payer and dates as separate clues. The organisation where the work happened might not be the pension scheme contact. Verify the scheme through payroll or joining paperwork.
If a payslip’s employer changes, preserve the earlier employment trail instead of replacing it. A new name should prompt a question about which scheme record and pay periods it covers.
- Who is named as the employer and who pays the work income?
- Which document confirms scheme membership?
- Which entries are employer or employee payments, and for what period?
- Has the pension provider recorded the corresponding receipt?
Raise the particular contribution question
A deduction on a payslip and a receipt on a pension statement may answer different parts of the query. Describe the period and the unclear entry to payroll, then keep the scheme’s explanation beside it. The linked contribution guide helps structure that question without concluding an underpayment.
Agency or company arrangements may raise employment-status or off-payroll questions. Use the official routes linked from GOV.UK and appropriate advice; this page does not decide IR35, employment rights or an enrolment duty.
Organising does not select a pension or approve an arrangement
Keep real contracts, payslips, member references and client information privately. The browser organiser holds short work notes only; it has no umbrella validation, payroll connection, status checker or provider retrieval.
For a personal or company arrangement, use the linked self-employed/business guides for the distinct record questions. No provider ranking, pension transfer, payment, tax strategy or umbrella-company recommendation is made here.
