Keep the original name and date
Copy the provider and scheme names from the document into your private notes, with its date. Keep the employer and member reference alongside them, rather than replacing the old name with one you recognise today.
For a fictional example, a letter headed “Example Original Plan” and a later reply headed “Example Current Services” may be connected. The two headings alone do not prove that the reply covers the original record.
Check a current official route
MoneyHelper points to the ABI for provider contact information when names change or organisations merge. The ABI’s tracing page discusses cross-checking an unfamiliar tracing letter against its member information.
Use the source as a contact lead and record where you found it. Do not treat a search result, a corporate announcement or similar branding as a complete pension-transfer history.
Ask which original arrangements it handles
Ask the current contact whether it handles the original scheme name, employment period and record reference. If the answer is limited to certain plans, retain that limitation in your note.
A useful question is: “Does your team handle records for this original arrangement, and if not, which official contact should I use?” Follow the recipient’s verified identity process before supplying private documents.
Leave an unverified mapping unresolved
The All Pensions contact directory has not mapped historical brands to individual scheme successors. It also does not confirm regulatory permissions or that a provider holds your record. Use its named references for the official contact scope they describe.
Once a record is identified, ask for current information and check your contact details through the scheme’s official process. There is no need to choose a transfer simply to resolve an old name.
