Early retirement: separate stopping work from pension access

Check State Pension and scheme dates, quotation assumptions and the questions an early work change leaves open. No target retirement age or withdrawal rule.

Three dates can answer three different questions

Your preferred date to stop work, a private scheme’s pension dates and State Pension age are different records. GOV.UK says that stopping work before State Pension age does not allow you to claim the State Pension early.

GOV.UK also explains that private pension access depends on scheme rules, with specific provisions for matters such as ill health or protected rights. Ask the provider to confirm the rules applying to you. An advert offering early access is not evidence that those provisions apply.

Request the assumptions for the date you are considering

Keep the date and assumptions on any scheme quote beside its figure. Ask whether a document refers to the scheme’s normal pension date or the earlier date you are considering, and whether continuing work or contributions are assumed.

GOV.UK notes that retiring early can mean less time to build a pension pot. Do not treat an old estimate for a later date as guaranteed income at an earlier one. Ask for an explanation of what changes, including any scheme-specific reduction, charge or condition.

A pot value and an income quote are not interchangeable. Keep them separately labelled; an unknown payment amount or access date must stay unknown rather than becoming zero or an assumed starting point.

Make the period before confirmed income visible

In your preparation notes, mark when work income is expected to stop and when each pension source is confirmed to become available. List unanswered cost and income questions for any period between those dates.

This article does not supply a bridging-investment plan, a sustainable withdrawal rate, a savings multiple or a verdict that early retirement is affordable. It does not assess ill-health eligibility. Use the official access guide, provider information and appropriate guidance or advice before making decisions.

You do not need to upload medical or identity information to use this guide. Keep private evidence in the relevant provider’s verified process; keep only short notes in your All Pensions draft.
