Returning to the UK: reconnect your pension records

Bring UK and overseas work records together without confusing pension membership, State Pension eligibility and tax residence.

Make a timeline of the move

List when you worked abroad, when you returned and which employers or schemes belong to each period. Keep copies of overseas membership and contribution records privately before losing access to former payroll or online accounts. Dates are useful questions for the authorities, not a pension entitlement calculation.

Reconnect with existing UK schemes

Find the official contact route for each UK scheme and check the address and contact details it holds. Joining a new UK employer’s pension does not automatically combine earlier UK or overseas pensions. Keep the earlier records visible until the relevant schemes confirm their status.

Ask about overseas periods

Use GOV.UK’s living and working overseas guidance to frame questions about the countries and social-security periods involved. Keep any overseas State Pension question separate from a private pension. An overseas record is not proof that it increases a UK State Pension amount.

Treat tax residence as a separate question

Returning to the UK can raise tax questions about residence and income from the UK and abroad. GOV.UK provides the starting route. Ask HMRC or an appropriate adviser about your circumstances before assuming that a move date settles the treatment of pension income.

Keep a short list of unresolved questions

For each record, note the organisation, the period it covers, its official contact route and the answer still needed. Check current rules with that organisation instead of treating a name or old statement as current confirmation.

  • Does the scheme have my current correspondence details?
  • Which country’s authority can explain these social-security periods?
  • Who can explain the tax treatment of the particular pension income?

Keep real documents out of the organiser

The organiser holds short work notes only; it cannot assess tax residence, retrieve overseas records or arrange a pension transfer. Keep real identifiers, travel history and tax correspondence in your own secure records. No recommendation about contribution payments, transfers or claiming benefits is made here.
