Working abroad: keep your pension records connected

Separate UK pensions, overseas schemes and social-security records before asking the right organisation about your move.

Start with three separate records

Keep UK workplace or personal pensions, any overseas workplace scheme and State Pension or social-security records distinct. An overseas job does not itself confirm membership of a UK scheme or locate an old pension. Write down the country, employer and work dates as clues.

Check which social-security system applies

GOV.UK explains that the country where you work and the arrangement covering your work affect social-security contributions. Use its current country guidance and ask the relevant authority which system applies to your situation. Do not assume an overseas posting and a new job abroad have the same treatment.

Keep State Pension questions separate

Overseas social-security periods may be relevant to State Pension eligibility under the applicable rules. That is a different question from how much UK State Pension you will receive. Ask the official authorities to explain how the particular countries and periods are treated; do not add overseas years to a UK forecast yourself.

Ask each pension scheme what changes

Use each scheme’s official contact route to check how it records your address, employment change and future correspondence. Ask about any restrictions affecting contributions or access from abroad. A change of residence is not a reason to assume you should transfer a pension.

  • Keep dated employment and scheme membership records privately.
  • Record which organisation answered each question and what remains unconfirmed.
  • Keep overseas scheme names and references separate from UK schemes.

Use private records and current official help

The organiser is for short notes only. Do not enter passport details, National Insurance numbers, tax documents or overseas member references. It cannot establish residence, social-security liability or pension entitlement.

Cross-border tax, voluntary contributions and transfers need individual consideration. This guide helps organise questions; it does not recommend payments, transfers or a tax arrangement.
